Liron Shapira, host of the Doom Debates podcast, set a clean, time-bounded tail-risk marker on Sept. 7, 2026: 50% confidence that Bitcoin falls more than 50% over the next two years, framed as an AI-driven security risk. The call was directional and probabilistic, but it left the key variable undefined, because Shapira did not specify which layer of Bitcoin’s security model AI would weaken.

Vitalik Buterin replied in the same X thread and took the other side explicitly. “I take the opposite side of that,” he wrote, adding he is “quite optimistic about cybersecurity in the long term.” His framing was that the hard part is not an immediate collapse of cryptographic guarantees, but the operational reality of transitioning to new defenses as threats evolve.

Buterin also narrowed the technical claim to a specific primitive. He put the odds of a break in hashing or proof-of-work (PoW), Bitcoin’s mining-based security mechanism, “close to zero,” signaling he does not expect AI to undermine the core assumption that makes rewriting Bitcoin history prohibitively expensive on the stated horizon.

He argued Bitcoin can handle issues that do not require social consensus through defensive measures that look more like operations than ideology. Buterin pointed to client upgrades and mining-pool protections against network-layer attacks, meaning attacks on connectivity and routing rather than the chain’s cryptography.

The disagreement was not framed as a debate-for-debate’s-sake. Buterin declined to formalize it as a wager, saying his portfolio already expresses the view: “I would offer a bet, but given what my holdings are I’m basically taking this bet … with ~90% of my net worth already.”

For traders, the most concrete part of the exchange is the threshold itself. Bitcoin traded near $79,827 at the time, and a drawdown of more than 50% from that level implies a move toward roughly $40,000 within two years.

That matters because it turns an abstract AI-security argument into a publicly auditable benchmark with a clock attached. Shapira’s claim is not “AI is scary” in the general sense. It is a two-year window in which a security-driven narrative is supposed to be strong enough, or real enough, to coincide with a halving of spot.

The missing piece is mechanism. The broader 2026 debate referenced in the exchange is that more capable AI tools could automate cyberattacks, find cryptographic weaknesses, or accelerate vulnerability discovery in widely used software and hardware. But Shapira’s 50% probability did not name an attack path, whether that is a break in hashing assumptions, a mining-infrastructure compromise, a client-software vulnerability, or a network-layer failure that degrades liveness and trust.

Buterin’s pushback is more than rhetorical because he tied it to positioning and to a specific technical assertion, putting PoW and hashing breakage at close to zero odds and declining a formal bet on the grounds that “~90% of my net worth” is already on the line. If Shapira’s side stays mechanism-light, this looks more like a sentiment catalyst than a technically grounded security thesis, and the practical test becomes whether the market ever treats ~$40,000 as a live, time-boxed tail-risk line rather than a talking point.
